What a Salve Is and How You Use One

A salve is oil that's had plants soaked in it, firmed up with beeswax so it holds its shape in a tin. Soaking a plant in a liquid to draw its compounds out is called infusing, and it works with oil as well as with water (Ahmed et al., 2026). The plant-soaked oil is called an infused oil, and in a salve it's the part carrying the plant's compounds.

My salves at KBA & Co are made this way, slow-infused in organic oils and thickened with beeswax.

Why a salve keeps without a preservative

A salve has no water in it. That means it needs no preservative, and it keeps roughly nine to twelve months.

What a salve does on your skin

The outermost layer of your skin is called the stratum corneum. Water moves up through your skin and evaporates out through that layer all the time, and the name for that water leaving is transepidermal water loss.

Oily substances spread over the stratum corneum form a coating on it. That coating slows down how fast water escapes through the skin, so more of the water stays in your skin instead of evaporating off it. An ingredient that works this way is called an occlusive (Kang et al., 2022; Rajkumar et al., 2023). The groups of occlusive ingredients in moisturizers include vegetable oils like olive oil, vegetable fats like shea butter and cocoa butter, and waxes like beeswax (Kang et al., 2022). The oils, butters and beeswax in a salve belong to those same groups.

Kang and colleagues also note that an occlusive slows water loss most effectively when it goes on right after washing or bathing (Kang et al., 2022). A bath or a wash leaves your skin holding extra water for a while afterward (Kang et al., 2022), and a coating that goes on while that extra water is still there slows it from evaporating back out.

How you use one

You take a small amount out of the tin with a clean finger and rub it into the skin where you want it, until it's spread into a thin layer.

Where you put it depends on what the salve is for. Two of mine show the difference:
